EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Or a couple beavers.

Having heat hardy birds is a godsend. It probably wouldn't work for Banty or anyone else who lives near the arctic circle. Winter would then be a problem.
Yup. The birds that are doing the worst in the current weather do the best in winter. Jace, my spoiled, cold-hating pet bantam, is loving it. She's currently sunbathing and not panting in the slightest. Crazy old bird.

They have been doing all right, or as all right as anything can be in weather so hot that paper seems tempted to spontaneously combust. I almost lost my Ameraucana cock but I got him cooled down in time. I'm having to soak him in cold water twice a day or else he sprawls out flat on the floor and looks to be in extreme distress. And that's in full shade with fresh water. :hmm The free range birds look hot but are still mobile. The goats are panting and drinking a lot, but still eating well and active.

I have three air conditioners running and it's barely tolerable in the house. This weather is for the birds. Or, it would be, if they didn't all die in it too. :barnie

I'm moving to Greenland. Or somewhere else where summer is nonexistant. I'd just about give my firstborn for a snowstorm right now.

Footbaths do wonders for the chickens.

For those with insufficient shade, I prefer shade cloth to tarps. Rain will go right through.
90% shade cloth is ideal. You can get remnants cheaply at FarmTek. If the remnants don't fit your needs, they'll cut any dimension you need.

Thanks. I managed to get all the pens shaded.

I have a few big rubber feed tubs with a frozen water bottle floating in them and my other breeds made good use of them but the Penes don't seem to mind the heat.
They don't start panting till well over 95.
I lost a nice Wellsummer hen a few years ago to heat.
I revived her with a cool bath and a night in the basement but I made a huge mistake by putting her back outside the next day when she seemed recovered.
If I kept her in the cool space a couple more days, I'm sure she'd still be with us.

What a nice break. We might get a couple days below 90 this weekend.
++++++++++++++++
I received an alert this morning.
"You have been awarded a trophy: 1st Page Rated"
Does anyone know what this means?
It's because of management tinkering with things. Everyone that has ever given an article a star rating gets one. They're currently doing huge overhaul with the coop sections and this is part of it, I think.

For the 1st time ever, I found one of my hens standing in the water dish yesterday, in a tarped run under a huge tree. It was 107* with the H.I.

We've had mid 90s with heat index from 100-110.
Identical to our weather pattern. 20 or so young birds in the barn went out with trash collection today. The adults in the runs and houses seen to be fairing. I have another 40 or so that need to go out but the barn has a tin roof. Humidity gets in your lungs.
Worst in ten yrs here. In the big house, 80-90 birds only laying 5 eggs a day for the last week.
This weather is expected to stick around for awhile.
