EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Identical to our weather pattern. 20 or so young birds in the barn went out with trash collection today. The adults in the runs and houses seen to be fairing. I have another 40 or so that need to go out but the barn has a tin roof. Humidity gets in your lungs.
Worst in ten yrs here. In the big house, 80-90 birds only laying 5 eggs a day for the last week.
This weather is expected to stick around for awhile.
Sorry about the birds. So far we are doing well. Only 88 here now. One chick wasn’t looking well but heat wasn’t the problem. Just didn’t like his food thank you, I put some small meal worms in with their food at he’s gone bonkers for them. Which I’m really glad for as he’s the only one of 11 eggs that hatched. Hope he makes it.
Well break is over. I’ve taken the week off to get stuff done around here and neighbor will be wanting his trailer back real soon. It’s almost full of junk.

Bummer.
My production is way down except with the oldest hens. Most 3 to 6 year old hens are laying every day.
I'm afraid it will get worse in the future. Maybe we can construct tunnels for the chickens with solar LEDs or move to higher elevation.
Many of the coffee farmers in Costa Rica have already moved their trees farther up the mountains in anticipation of the global warming trends.

I have a free flock who lives total free range-nite-day. They are not effected egg production wise. They congregate from area to area across the residential side of our farm. I suppose moving to cooler location as the day progresses. The many birds in the house/run facility's, are suffering. I have placed misters and fans in the nesting areas.
The barn is the worst. Peak breeding season. Chick sales are over but we hatch to get to size now. Those are the birds in jeopardy. 3 ceiling fans and a couple box fans blowing outwards.
It rains everyday so the air is wet. It is like a Turkish steam bath. I have been ill so I'm not in the barn all day lately. I feel a little guilty. My antibiotics have been kicking in. I have to do some quarters re arranging tomorrow. I have a big hatch that needs to go out like now. And a fresh hatch started yesterday.
Lost a score but gained a score. oh well.

The Ameraucana cock escaped and started fighting. I found him on his back in the dirt, beaten completely by a Silkie. He can't stand and doesn't move his head much at all. His body temperature isn't high now but he's still panting like a golden retriever after a steak. I put him in a bigger/softer pen. We'll see if he makes it through the night.

I have one son of his but I really wanted at least one more season from him. :hmm The genetic pool is limited enough as it is.

Crud. Not sure why but it seems to always be the one you want to make it. Of all the times to fight he picks the heat. And beat by a silkie to boot.

To be fair, said Silkie is a pretty experienced fighter and large for his breed. Still, the Ameraucana is a good three pounds bigger.

He's a jerk when he isn't mostly dead, but I still wanted him.
