You must live far up north if it was 40 degrees in the end of August, we are lucky if it even gets to 80 during this time of year down where we live.
What if it's over a 105 degrees out and a hen is sitting on eggs, won't they likely get too overheated?

I've got the fire place on today.... Last few days. Pretty sure it might have frosted last night.... I'm afraid to go look at my garden

My set up here works pretty good... When it's in the below zero range I never let them out.
I know they don't like being cooped up in there but if it aint fit for man or beast they stay in.
It's suprised me how much warmer the coop stays in the winter

I let them out in anything not too snowy or windy to see the coop from the house.
It was -1F in this image and my dummies were ranging as far as they could on the trampled paths. That's not their coop, by the way, theirs is about 15 feet to the left. They came out in colder weather too, but I was afraid of my camera not taking it well.

I used to lock them up, but they'd practically stage a full scale riot if they didn't at least get to poke their heads out.

Coop does definitely stay warmer. I once got locked in the coop in shorts in below 0 weather. It was actually rather pleasant in there, without the wind.

Wow, your count s lower than mine. I've been pretty good at catching broody hens and breaking them.

Well you all are doing good....I wish one of my AC hens would go broody....I can't even figure out where they are hiding there eggs this week

I've only been using broody hens this year.



Never inside again, unless Moose wants chicks. Lol

Think I’m at 30 now. Mostly young ones. Feels good.

I have seven Ayam Cemeni's ,3 Kahki Campbell's and two Calls.
I used to have way more ducks but have several away to freeing who wanted to start their own flocks . One died.... My favorite "Snowball" hit by a car. I had Cayogas too but my Drake wouldn't except then and there duck drama got to be to much..... So I rehomed them.

I usually use 0 and my cut off.
But if it's a still day and the sun is out I will let them out in colder. Just depends on the day.
But in the dead of winter when the temps dip into the way negatives they want out but I am the keeper of the cheese ..... And I say NO
