1) They wolf down their food so quickly! Should I get something to make him slow down? Like the maze bowls or the puzzle feeder where he has to open one door, slide another...
2) He’s been fed the typical amount (1.5 C ), but I actually pay attention to him all day (as opposed to having him kenneled all but a few hours). What can I do to satisfy his food drive that keeps him running to the kitchen for anything he can get?
3) I know firsthand the dangers of rawhides. Marrow bones are bad too. What is best for aggressive chewers ( my previous big dogs had whatever they wanted since I didn’t know the dangers firsthand yet!)? Toys are fun, but he’s been hiding them instead of chewing for a while.

Cleaned up and individually wrapped 5 loafs of soap today. A bit over 100 bars, many more for tomorrow. I can't stand sitting at table like that, need a butt cushion cause my back and tailbone are sore as heck.

Whew! It’s gotten cold! I went out in cut off‘s and a flannel with flip-flops today. Now I’m freezing in a sweatshirt and sweatpants!
“Someone” is burrying all of their toys in my bedroom.

I apparently need to lower the gate, but it’s so funny!!

O.K., Abi, let's try this again. Dogs naturally wolf their food down. It may be instinct from when they were wild & had to compete for their food with other pack members; I don't know. I fed my dogs almost exclusively from self feeders. They never got hungry'cause the feed was right there 24/7 & they could nibble any time they wanted. When they learn that their feed is constantly available & there's no need to compete for it, they'll usually slow down.
Not all dogs do well on self feeders, though. Once in a while a dog will get overweight on a self feeder 'cause he can't learn to regulate his intake. Fortunately, I never owned one of those.

Regarding bones, mine rarely got them. Never got any rawhide ones; no particular reason, just didn't. I never fed them chicken bones due to the splintering. Once in a great while I'd give them a large beef bone; something too large for them to break up.

Our last dog was a Jack Russell, strictly a house pet. He was always on dry feed, free choice, and stayed trim his entire life. We'd give him a large beef bone now & then, & there was usually a rawhide bone in his Christmas stocking; never had a problem with either. He was hell on toys, though. He knew which Christmas packages were his, & he'd open them himself, get the toy out, & have it destroyed in about 5 minutes. If it was a squeaky toy, it didn't squeak long. If a stuffed toy, he disemboweled it just about as quick, scattering stuffing all over the room.

Hope this helps some. Looks & sounds like a smart, reasonably well behaved dog that appears to have been well cared for. Hope you enjoy him for many years to come.

I’m very impressed with how smart he is. He’s already not jumping on me when I have something for him. He’s not on the counter as much either.
I hadn’t considered that his eating habits would slow down once he got used to the fact that there are no other dogs to compete with.

Harley would take a square rawhide chip, and chew it into a perfect circle every time. He was swallowing them faster than we knew. They formed a layer in his intestines. His death was very tragic, and incredibly painful for him. He was actually my dog, but my husband had never had to deal with losing an animal before. So, rather than letting Harley go before it got too awful, we spent almost $5,000 trying to save him. Plasma didn’t work, and even with morphine, he was screaming in pain his last night. It was midnight Thanksgiving morning when the vet told me to come first thing in the morning to let him go.
Then my husband got Sturgis. I didn’t want the dog, and the dog didn’t want my husband... But that dog loved me, and loved Duckling!! Man, did he love that child!!
I am already upset about losing Maaco. I hope he lives a very long life.

Maaco's the Beagle you just got, right? Take care of him as you did Sturgis, and there's no reason for him not to have a long, happy life.

I realize now that while he’s vaccinated for a million things most dogs don’t need to have, IDK if he’s on Heartguard, or what flea and tick prevention. I am out of Frontline (I ordered a collar though. So much cheaper!!), but have Heartguard. I wish we’d realized that we forgot to update our numbers. We both have replaced phones, and lost numbers. We just forgot that when the deal was going down.
