EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Oh! And one more thing! Today is day 3 for the shipped eggs I have going, and I foolishly candled (just 3, thankfully!) to see if the air cells had stabilized. I tried to candle upside down so it wouldn't disturb the cells, but I couldn't see anything that way. I tipped them to the side, and still couldn't see the air cells. So, I gently flipped one the usual way, and, to my joy, saw a perfect air cell! But just for 3 seconds or so, and then--bloop! It slipped away! Darn it! So now I'm wondering how to work with them. Obviously I have them fat end up in the incubator, and I haven't been turning them. Should I wait another day before I begin to tilt them from side to side? Should I not candle at all? How do I measure air cells, since I didn't weigh them (stupid) to start with? They're in a cheap Janoel 12 right now, but I will move them over to the Brinsea once the current batch is out of there. Should I just aim for the same humidity levels I used this time and cross my fingers?

Oh! I'll do that before I go to bed! It will be fun to see how close they get, lol. I had several malpositions with my last hatch, before I had researched incubating shipped eggs. My only other hatch was Icelandics, too, and they hatched on day 21, BUT the incubator has run a bit warmer this time around because of increased ambient temps, so I am expecting them to make an earlier appearance. Speaking of which, I've seen some mentions here and there that 100 or 100.5 is actually better than the oft-quoted 99.5. Does anyone have any opinions or insight into this?

My hatches always seem to do best running around 100.5. that's just what works for me.

If it was me, I would go ahead and start turning them if they're in a Turner that stands them upright and not candle again until day 10 but that's just me. For hatching with rolling air cells, I think it works best to have them situated in an upright position so the air cell stays where it should. An egg carton with the bottoms cut out for better air flow work really well for that.

Once you see the difference 100.5 makes you’ll stick with that temp.

I cant even remember when I started to run at 100.5 to be honest, cleaner hatches, no goop left in the shells after hatch, nice healthy chicks. Like I said before running lower at all under 99.8 is bad. even if its fluxing under those few minutes add up in the long run. I have no clue where anything is on this new place BYC moved to, but I did have detailed explanations etc for temps. @BantyChooks ?? anyways, When I lock down I lower temps to 100 and when I see a pip I go 98.5 yes 98.5. Good Luck maybe sweets knows where stuff went over here. sorry this place confuses me with new layout

Never dropped at lockdown pip. I’ll give that a go next time.
Currently I have a broody on 12 eggs due the 16th. But she only started with 2 so I’m planning on getting eggs a day or so ahead. There’s too many in that coop to have chicks in there anyways.

End of day 19 and no sign of imminent hatching. The anticipation reminds me of my first pregnancy, thinking from 38 weeks on that it would be "any day now!" Well, I ended up going past 41 weeks with all 4 kids! I need to apply the patience I learned from that to hatching, I guess. *foot tapping* :barnie
