EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Crickets here. Lots here this year. Right by my window at night.. Wait, did I say the bugs were down? Maybe I'm just grateful that the flys were down this year. I keep mentioning other bugs that were prolific. Which have been a lot. But flys..hmm..no chickens, not so many flys. They were back yard after all. :D

@ChickenCanoe @Pensmaster you guys can have some of iFrogz the rocket is deafening at night in the summertime oh, well not quite but it can get annoying.

of course, I will take their noisy any day over the cicada and all the stupid grasshopper types
I'll take the frog noises over the alternative of there being no frogs. When amphibians die out, we are in trouble environmentally.
How is your raccoon situation? Have you ever used the Duke style dog proof leg traps? For my money they are several hundred percent more effective than other cage traps and much cheaper.

I fortunately only lost a couple to raccoons this year and none to mink. However, coyotes have taken a couple roosters. So I'm down to 2 primary roosters. (with 2 backups I already have chicks from and don't want to use for breeding again).

well, I keep catching the skunk at the moment I caught for coons and hauled them off to really young ones too big adults. Unfortunately, the three headed monster is still on the loose :( :rant

I have never tried that type of trap.

Sorry you have lost several. it is a much bigger deal for you with your specialty breed than the fact that I lost couple of generic hens.
I do know I need to make some serious repairs to the one run asap. My goats have damaged and disconnected spots in the hardware cloth using it to scratch

@Akrnaf2 Shalom! I hope your school week has been better. I could really use some suggestions of what to do with this Jerusalem artichoke. someone suggested years ago to plant something new and try it okay I've got a bunch of it now what do I do with it?
@Sally Sunshine which are your favorite oils for like a face or gardener's soap?
You can bake it like a potato
2 pounds piled (?) washed And cut to pieces of 1.5-2cm.
4-5 tbs o extra virgin Olive oil
Salt
pepper
Dried parsley
Mix everything in a bawle put on baking sheet and bake at 180C°
45-55 minutes until golden and soft to eat.
You can make a soup from it, add it to meat stews ect ect.

Last year I set a DP leg trap and a cage trap 20ft apart most nights. If I baited and set one, I set the other. The entire year I caught 9 raccoons in the leg trap and not one in the Hav-a-Hart.
That's all the anecdotal evidence I need. I never set the cage trap for raccoons any more.

Thanks I will try that. I am a little leery to try it, and I don't know why it's just your basic root.

I need to research how the one works. with the have a heart I just take them to work with me and let them out in this little couple of block area where there's trees and water and stuff in town essentially
I figure I'm doing my part part for those mangy coyotes that nobody will help. they really needed to be captured and taken out further or helped. I haven't seen them recently though I wonder if they went ahead and died. they were Juniors too young to be by themselves, but I think mommy got hit or something.

what I really need to send teenage boy that wants to come sit out with the 22 and just pick them off. I am just not good at shooting them no matter how much I don't like them as a predator. I just need them gone. funny I can shoot an animal for food, but since I'm not going to eat these... on the other hand, I don't want them eating my chickens. I have just been very thankful for my automatic doors.

It's been a hot minute since I've been around huh? Father in law is getting us an extravagantly large greenhouse which will make planting MUCH easier. Halloween soaps go up on the website October 1st, I have some really special things I'm doing with the designs this year. Kiddo is sprouting like a weed, he's already shot past three feet tall and he's running around in 2T clothes. When I start making the Christmas soaps in October I'm going to be starting a YouTube channel with soap making and soap cutting videos, posting the first videos in November. Been super busy all around.

In chicken news I'm hoping that next year we'll have gotten everything set up for four pullets. We have the space, even with the greenhouse being put in. Our breeder has Ayam Cemani and some other Asian breeds I want to look at. Our neighbor already bought some of his Malay Game Fowl X Cemani crosses from the guy and a couple Cemani hens, I'll see how they do over the winter before I consider them.

Never tried the leg trap. Cage trap works well here.
