The reddening of the comb is normal. As they get closer to puberty, their comb turns bright red, just like the boys. I think it's probably testosterone that does it - boys have more their whole life and get more close to puberty. Girls don't have a large enough amount until they're older.

Interestingly, all my broody hens have had a comb that turns very pale while they're sitting.
