I have two EE roos that are about 18 weeks old. They have been booted out of the coop and run during the day due to their rough, nasty, mean treatment of the hens (the will be going to freezer camp sometime in Oct.)
So in the evening I go out open the human door they go in and jump up on the roost and in the morning I toss their butts out.
Well last night I didn't get out until about 8:15 and the one roo was standing by the door waiting to be let in the other roo no where to be found.
So on my way back to the house the OEG bantam roo crowed and the fugitive answered. I said to myself, "self that sounds like it came from the pecan tree". So I go look and sure enought their that booger is up in the tree and I mean UP IN THE TREE.
He was at least 40 feet up. The first branch is at least 15 feet up from the ground, would have bet you $100 that rooster couldn't fly up 15 feet. The tree is not really close to anything either in which he could have flown from to get to that low branch. The coop is 7 feet high at it's low peak and at least 30 feet from this tree.
Getting to the branch he was on probably (obviously not) was not a big deal as the branches are but a few feet apart up the tree.
So he obviously spent the night in the tree but I thought to myself that fool is gonna break his neck when he flies down in the morning. Well when I got up this morning and looked out he was already on the ground and seemed to be just fine.
In my 40 years I have never seen a chicken go that high into a tree and I have had a few renagads try to roost in trees at night.

wow, that's amazing. I wouldn't have thought one could get that high up either. Is he going back up there again?

I sat on the patio last night, the curiosity was killing me on how he did it. About 7:45 He flew to the roof of the coop (he did that wing beat thing and crowed several time, he was so proud of himself) and then flew over to the lowest branch in the pecan tree, like I mentioned before it's a good 30 feet. Flew to that branch with ease, reminded me of a wild turkey in flight. It truely wasn't an effort for him.
I jumped up and ran him off the branch with a broom and into the coop.
I guess I am gonna have to clip one of his wings, we have coons out the ears around here and I see no reason to waste a good meal.
