Last week, I went by my post office to tell them that I was expecting my chicks to ship out Monday (today) and that I would appreciate it if they could call me as soon as they arrived. They said that woud be fine, just call them and let them know the days they ship...which is today...which I just discovered is PRESIDENTS DAY and all the lame post offices are closed! I called Ideal, and they are still shipping out the babies today...so now I am in panic mode! I am not far from TX...what if they come in tomorrow and my PO doesnt know to call me?

ugh.

I don't like presidents day

If it's a small PO you could just show up insanely early with donuts. Haha!

To be serious, I just showed up really early. They sent me home, as the truck hadn't come in yet, and called an hour later.

But if you told them the chicks were going to ship Monday, they should expect to receive them tomorrow or Wed. So they may just remember to call you, but I wouldn't bet on that (just in case).

yeah, he didnt even take my number that day, told me just to call and provide it monday because it would get lost. I just moved to this post office area within the last 2 weeks, so they dont really know me yet either! The post office is kinda small...wonder what time they get there???

not sure about the hatchery you ordered from, but I get my chicks from McMurray and they put my phone number on the box. My local PO calls at the CRACK of dawn when the chicks arrive, mainly because the constant peeping drives them a little crazy :) Other times I've had a call the day before I expected the chicks - the main PO distribution center called me so I went down Sunday night and got my babies a day early. I do live in a rural area where "everybody knows your name" and there are a lot of chicks in the mail, so the postal people know what to do.

For your situation, I agree with the other posters. Show up early, bring treats, etc. When getting animals in the mail, it makes sense to get friendly with your PO!

Good luck!

lol thanks everyone! I am plotting...trying to find out what time people get there, etc...

I used Ideal. I requested extra straw in the box, etc...I called them today, and they said there is no tracking number, but that they are going out today....

I am SO worried....

Donuts it will have to be, and a very early wake up just in case...

Maybe 5ish?

My brooder is all set up and such (I like to call it "the sorting hat" lol)...I am so worried that it will stay empty

I have an order of chicks that were shipped yesterday - I contacted my PO last week to alert them. To be sure I stopped at the building where all the mail etc comes in..which is not the regular PO. The man in charge was very nice and gave me the unpublished # to call. He said that someone would be there all day Monday and to call first thing to see if the chicks had arrived. I called at 8 this morning and they did not come in today so it will be tomorrow. I will call 1st thing tomorrow if I have not heard from them. My phone #is on the box. Last time they called right away. I live 2 miles from the PO and sure hope they all make it!

All "lame post offices" (and most, if not all banks) are closed for federal holidays.

The mail will still be transported, though, by trucks, the factories, etc.

I would just call in the morning around 6, if they haven't called you by then and remind them. Our truck normally comes in around 5am or so.

The hatcheries have always put my # on the outside of the box, though so the P.O called whether I alerted them or not (even when I didn't work for them).
