I just set my duck eggs in the incubator today (they were just shipped and had sat in a cool area for about 36 hours), however, i went to add some water for humidity and got hit with a slightly rotten odor. So, I went through them and checked for cracks (again) to no avail, so I candled a few and found that quite a few look pretty developed already and one had to be tossed since it has a blood ring. Is that normal for only the first day of incubating????? What's going on with my little guys?? Do I need to toss the developed ones out? So bummed!

Thanks in advance!

Eggs that have only been incubated for one day should not look like that. They must have been pulled from a nest where they had been sat on for a while and then died during shipping. Get all the cloudy and dark eggs out of your incubator and contact the supplier for a refund or replacements. If any of the eggs show no development yet they may be ok. Compare them to a fresh egg from the fridge to see what they should look like at this point. Then candle again after 7 to 10 days and see if anything is growing.

I definitely agree! Looks like they were already being incubated before they were shipped to you. They look dead and that's why they stink already. I'd be pretty mad. I'd contact that seller and complain, and I am not one to complain. But this was obviously preventable. They should know what's fresh and what's not. Or at least candled the eggs before shipping if they were unsure. I always collect eggs everyday so I know it's fresh. They probably pulled them right out of a nest or kept them stored in a warm area. That's ashame!

Thank you guys so much for the input! I've taken all the cloudy and spotted eggs and put them to the side. From 15 eggs, I'm now down to 8 in the incubator :( :fl hoping the rest are fine. I'll candle again in 7 days and post back! I really do appreciate you guys helping me out!

More pics, different eggs. I sent her an email to let her know what I found and how many. Is it okay to ask for a refund or replacement? I completely understand the seller is not responsible for handling during the shipping process and so forth, it's just the chance you take. I'm just bummed that half were developed already! Is that on the seller's end of responsibility?

These were snapped from my cell phone, sorry about the quality.

Yes, I'd ask for a refund or a replacement. Hopefully she's nice about it. It would be her responsibility. This was not caused by you or from being shipped. They look to be 13-15 days into development/incubation. Either they were being incubated before she sent them to you or she stored them in a warm place for quite some time before she sold them. Are any of the dark masses moving within the eggs? You should see quite a bit of movement at that stage when candling. But I'm guessing they died during shipment. I hope you get your money back or she can send you fresh, un-incubated eggs. Maybe it was a mistake somehow. I like to candle every egg before I ship them because I like to look for imperfections like hairline cracks, etc. I don't want to send junk eggs because I would be embarrassed. I'm hoping the seller will be cool about it. Show her your pictures.

Thank you guys so much for the input... They were definitely dead. =( I sent photos along with my email and the breeder is going to send me replacements. Fingers crossed. I had to toss two more out yesterday.
