Hi there-
I just bought (3) 8-week old Easter Eggers or Ameracana hens. They came from McMurry's hatchery sexed as females.

How can i really tell that they are in fact Hens and not Roos? They have the very small, narrow and an almost non-existing pea comb. They are very soft in sound and are super sweet and submisive with my RI/NH reds (I have one that is a Diva Red).

Are there any other ways to tell for sure-before they surprise me and crow? my neighbors will kill me...the person that i bought them from will take them back if they turn out to be roos, but I hate to return them, beacause they are just so sweet.

Here are the photos-all have rounded feathers from what i can see. also, how do you tell what color the eggs will be before they lay them-i was told by their leg color-not sure if that is corect or not.

Also, if they turn out to be roos-how soon do they crow (weeks).

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I read that you can tell by the color of their ear's all of my EEs have green ears and they all lay green egg's
as far as gender it is hard to tell without a picture but pointed neck feathers are roo's
hen's get their tails earlier then roo's

Last year I bought (8) one week old "pullet" EE's and by the time they were 3 weeks old I was becoming suspicious of one of them and by the time they were 8 weeks old I knew for sure that he was NOT a pullet chick

My first batch of chicks was from McMurray's and I got exactly what I ordered but this spring I ordered 25 pullet day old chicks from McMurray's and one of the buff O's has a very large red comb an wattles so even the hatcheries aren't 100% accurate.

Those are pullets, for sure. Very pretty!

And I've never seen a bird with green ears. Mine have red, but lay green eggs.

how can everyone tell that they are pullets for sure? just curious??? I'm new at this...
