I found one of my hens last night with a nasty case of bumblefoot. After looking at the pics of surgery on the BYC website, I performed amateur surgery on our girl. I'm pretty sure I got all the infection dug out, and the sweling was noticeably reduced. I called my vet today, and while he is not up to speed on poultry, he has worked on cattle, etc. My vets concern is the effect of the Neopsporin on the eggs. My question is: will the neosporin be absorbed into the hens system and cause the eggs to not be safe for our consumption? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I've been reading on here about using Neosporin on chicken wounds for a few years now, and never once heard this suggested. Does he have a source, some research that suggests this is a concern? I searched via Google and couldn't find any. I did find that Storey's Guide to raising chickens recommends Neosporin for frostbite.

BTW, welcome to BYC!

I've never heard of egg withdrawal for neosporin neither. Since it's a topical ointment and not injested, I doubt it's an issue. I've eaten eggs after neosporin usage...still here typing.

I use neosporyin on all my critters...and me. Had a stye last month and I put gobs of it on my eye..and some got IN my eye. And Im sure weve all gotten it in our mouths at times...I have....cut finger, ointment...rubbed mouth....and Im still here. I think your vet has that confused with internal feed through antibiotics.
