I have 6 hens I have 5 that are laying that is the most we have gotten so far.
Here is my issue yesterday I found an egg with no shell on the roosting area. I found a thin shell on coop floor looked almost like a small balloon.
Today we again found the shell very thin brittle, it is very hot here heat wave over 90 last 3 days, but NO egg anywhere.
I have no idea if this is my 6th chicken beginning to lay or one that was laying.
The eggs we have gotten to this point have been thick shelled to point I have to whack twice before breaking. They free range hours per day, have oyster shell available, grit, and are fed layering pellets. Any idea greatly appreciated!

Laying soft shell eggs can be normal, laying from the roost is normal, especially in beginning layers, it can take a bit to get the system going properly, and of course laying times, amounts, and type of eggs can change daily. First eggs are usually the hardest, they will get thinner the longer they are in lay. So sounds like everything is normal.

The heat can play a part for sure...and soft and thin shelled eggs are not at all unusual for new layers.
It can take new layers up to a month or so to get things smoothed out.

If you free range all day that may be where some of your eggs are.
Free range birds sometimes need to be 'trained'(or re-trained) to lay in the coop nests, especially new layers.
Leaving them locked in the coop for 2-3 days can help 'home' them to lay in the coop nests.
They can be confined to coop 24/7 for a few days to a week, or confine them at least until mid to late afternoon.
You help them create a new habit and they will usually stick with it.

We free range in late afternoon and early evening only when we are home and able to watch them. Our eggs are usually laid by then and honestly once a hen went back to coop around 3pm and laid one then came back out.

I had 5 eggs hard shells today. The last 2 days the egg was in one place in coop and shell in another place in coop, I don't know if it was an already laying hen or my "6th" hen giving her first attempts. The heat broke today, and there was no thin shell, and yolk in separate places in the coop.
I only have 6 hens so when I get 6 eggs I will know all is golden...time will tell I guess.
Thanks for the input...I had a feeling the heat was playing a factor the egg was gelled like almost partly cooked when I found it!
