egg bloom question

How much scrubbing would it take to wash off the bloom. If I just give them a quick rinse and lightly towel dry, does that take it off?

I'm not wanting to remove it is my point.

A quick rinse should be okay, maybe even a quick rub with your hands, but more then that, I'd guess it would wash off.

this may sound like a stupid question, but what is an Egg Bloom???

The bloom is a coating that the hen deposits on the egg. It keeps out dirt and germs by sealing the egg's pores. The egg stays fresher longer with the bloom intact.
ETA: I have on occasion collected an egg so quickly after it's been laid that the bloom has not yet dried. It's sticky when wet. I handle those eggs carefully by the ends until it dries.

There is no need to wash eggs. If you are keeping nesting boxes changed and clean they won't be dirty. If they do get some spots I use a very fine sanding sponge and gently take it off. If you wash off bloom you are leaving the egg wide open to absorb any germs it is exposed to. Then you eat it and you may become ill.

In some states it is illigal for commercial egg companys to wash eggs.
