I'm in tears. My husband's beloved pet cockatoo, Kady is sick. I believe she is egg bound. She is 13 years old, and has never laid an egg before. She's not been eating well for a few days, and has been quiet. My DH is away, and I've kept him appraised of the situation. I thought that maybe she was missing him.. I've been hearing a terrible squeeking sound, but thought it was my parakeet, making a new sound. Today, I discovered that it is Kady, straining to poop. Her vent is terribly swollen. I called my local vet,, who is still not taking new patients.. I called the bird store owner, and he gave me several avian vet numbers. I called each one, and every one is unable to see her. I called every lead each of them gave me. No luck. The bird store owner recommended a steamy room and some mineral oil, gently applied to the vent opening. When she strains, she almost prolapse. I just want my husband to come home and be with his baby :'(

Kady passed her egg! She jumped down from her perch, where I was steaming her in the bathroom, and left behind a broken egg. I took the egg up to the bird store, where we bought her (they are wonderful people), and was told that she likely broke the egg outside of her body, in the fall. He didn't think it broke inside. Just the same - I was given some antibiotics for her.
She's definitely not feeling great. She's resting in her cage. I'm making up her antibiotic solution, and will cuddle with her in a bit, and get it into her.
She had some blood on the eggshell. I'm sure she is hurting. Poor baby. But, I'm so relieved she passed it. The bird man said that cockatoos typically lay 2x a year. But, she might not lay again. I do hope the latter. Clearly the vets aren't going to help if she becomes eggbound, again. I called 6 clinics. One of them said they could get her in on Monday. I told them she wouldn't survive until Monday. They gave me another number to try, which I had already tried. And they told me "Good luck".
