Hello all
My Black Copper Maran is egg bound. She’s been lethargic for a number of days now and no eggs produced. Lost a lot of weight now as well. Took her to vets today and they x-rayed her - egg stuck near her spine. They lubricated her vent, gave her something to increase her contractions and said it should pass within 6 hours if it was going to. It’s now been 7.5 hours!!!
I’ve done Epsom salt bath, lubricated again with Vaseline. I’m about to cook her up an egg with the shell and give her sugar water.
The vet wants me to take her back this morning (it’s now almost 2am) and will be suggesting removing the egg under general anaesthetic. I have already spent a fortune and am going to struggle to afford the op. Plus I have serious doubts she’ll survive it with how little food she’s eaten. I’m desperate now…please help.

What the vet gave her could be important information. Is it a type of calcium? Hopefully someone who has delt with this will chime in soon as being egg bound can be fatel.

Did the vet not tell you/show you how to tube feed her?

I would stop bathing her and put her in a dark quiet place so she can relax and pass the egg.

She is - the bath was hours ago - sorry, I wasn’t clear - I’m tired! She has been in a quiet dark place for hours and still no egg 😔
She has just eaten a reasonable amount of food - sweet corn, grapes, pellets, scrambled egg (with shell)…I’m now going to leave her for an hour (and doze) then come back to see if I can entice her with more food and water.
She did a small poo a little while ago - am I correct in thinking it’s the not being able to poo when egg bound that is more fatal than the egg being stuck? As in, does she still have time to allow things to happen naturally (I’m hoping food will help things as well)?

No…and they didn’t have any critical care food for me to give her, and I don’t have a syringe (and it’s the middle of the night so unable to get one)…
However the British Hen Welfare Trust sent me a diagram and description of how to feed her. But as she’s been eating off her own accord, and relatively enthusiastically, I’m assuming this is positive. The vet also gave her saline to rehydrate her, so hoping fluids not quite so essential either. I’m trying to mess with her a little as possible but as much as necessary…

Do you have a copy of the Xray image, if you do, do you mind posting it?

Giving the Calcium was a very good idea. Hopefully she'll be able to expel the egg or material on her own. Surgery is very risky.

If she's willing to eat on her own, that's good.

Is she an Ex Batt? If so, then she may have more issues as time goes by, it's not uncommon for hens to have reproductive disorders like Cancer, Salpingitis, etc.
