hey guys. One of my Isa Browns is either eggbound or has some sort of perintonitis...she has that hump on her back, tail down and lethargic. I checked her vent and there was a bit of what looked and felt like water, not slimy like an egg white, and she hasn't passed any shell or anything. Another thing- the hump comes and goes. She was okay this morning, tail was back up, and she was scratching around with the other girls. I found an egg, not in the box that had like a white film on it...not wet..almost like there was a new egg shell forming over the brown one. I have a picture of the egg and I'll take a pic of Luna in the morning and post it. I'm going to Vaseline her vent tomorrow morning as well. :(

It might be a calcium buildup...I only know what I have read here:

its a really good article on different eggs that you could end up getting. I stumbled upon it the other day, and there is a picture of calcium buildup on the outside of an egg. take a look and see if you think that sounds like what you are experiencing. hope it helps.

Thanks for the link! My hen just started paying. It's a good article and yes it looks like that photo of the white banding. Cause 2 unformed eggs bumping into each other.

My girls are healthy but it's good for me to be informed as to what health problems one can run into.

Ask me about dogs, I know a lot! Chickens next to nothing, LOL

I don't know anything about chicken health so sorry can't help you there.

Just curious has she been laying for a while?

No. In fact they all started laying a little bit early...they're around 4 month old, and we've been getting eggs for about two weeks. Also I'm not sure that egg was from her...I was just curious because it was dIfferent quality than other eggs I've been getting. It does look like it's a calcium coat, which sort of makes sense since I switched their feed and started putting oyster shell in there.

So...This morning I got an egg, I'm guessing from Luna, that was almost transparent the shell was so thin, but it was hard, so I know there was some calcium on it. I switched the food from medicated starter to layer feed with oyster shell...could the oyster shells be doing this? Getting too much? How do I regulate which hen eats how much of the oyster shells?

New layers are getting the egg production system in sync. Some get it running smoothly, in short time. Others may take a month to get egg laying, running smoothly.
You will get soft shells, malformed shells,View attachment 1096707 and calcium deposits,View attachment 1096711 in new layers. GC
This makes me feel a lot better. Thank you! I just don't want my girls to be in pain!

I read on BYC somewhere in reply to my question about feed. I thought layer feed (per feed store) to start laying feed BEFORE eggs production. The reply on here said DON'T start until a wile after eggs come.

This way the hens give their body the opportunity to naturally regulate itself. Much like menstration some girls may need help later on as they age to get system regular. Others have no problems at all. I'm oversimplifing about women's health but the analogy fits.

Could be switching feeds around may confuse their bodies?
