Help!!...one of my girls is egg bound. I noticed her today, however, my daughter says that she has been this way for a couple of days. She had part of her backside hanging out of her. I presume its from trying to pass the egg. I cleaned her up and I examined her and she has a solid (hard not soft) egg in her. She looks miserable. Any help? What should I do? I don't really want to kill her as she is a good egger producing extra large eggs.

I would take her in to see a vet if possible, if she is still alive. She probably had a prolapsed cloaca or vent, which can occur with or without an egg blocking the vent. A prolapse can occur from a too-large egg, from dehydration, and straining. Egg binding can occur from a lack of calcium or water. When the insides of the vent prolapse, they can become necrotic or dead from drying out, and the tissue may turn black. Keeping the tissue moist with honey or oil, applying honey or Preparation H cream, can help to keep tissue alive and shrink it to help in pushing it back inside. Soaking the bottom in warm epsom salts water daily, keeping the vent clean, and trying to get the egg out with manual maneuvering may help. Let us know what is happening.

Update:
Unfortunately my egg bound girl didn't make it....

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like she had a vent prolapse. There are some articles on it in the learning centre you might want to check out
