Chirping
Hi there, I have a seven month old pullet, Agnes, who was egg bound last week, has laid the egg (a big double yolk one), but still has diarrhea and a swollen belly. I'm wondering if anyone can share any experience or advice about what recovery looks like after being egg bound or if there might be something else going on with Agnes?
Timeline: It started about two weeks ago when I noticed Agnes had a really poopy butt. I cleaned her up, but it kept happening and I noticed she was also laying down on the ground a bunch, so I checked her vent for an egg and sure enough there was one. She also had a swollen belly (no penguin walk, though, and not super hard) and her crop was nearly empty every time I felt it. I saw her eating some, but not a lot. I gave her epsom salt baths and lubed up her vent, but she didn't lay the egg. Finally, I took her to the vet, they felt the egg but couldn't get it out, xrayed her, which showed the egg a little further back in her oviduct, so they gave us an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic. As we were leaving the vet, Agnes decided that would be the perfect time to lay her egg!
It's been a week since the vet visit and Agnes still has a swollen belly, still has diarrhea, hasn't laid another egg (none in there, I checked), and is still eating sparingly. We gave her the anti-inflammatory for three days and she's on the antibiotic 2x/day until tomorrow. She loves watermelon and ate a bunch of that and she'll sometimes peck at treats, but she's lost 7 oz. since the start of this, so I'm a little worried about her. Outwardly, she looks and acts normal.
