Egg bound or egg yolk peritonitis

Yes I have checked her abdomin and it is swollen but softer then yesterday when I we soaked her for the first time. She is lowering herself like she is trying to lay an egg and her vent is somewhat swollen and she is pushing. She ate again this afternoon and pooped but it was runny.

Also, is her abdomen (fluffy area below vent and between legs) bloated with fluid at all and is her breast muscle wasting away? (both may indicate EYP).
She is only swollen underneath. It was hard yesterday and today is softer. I have checked her vent and cannot feel an egg. She is lowering herself like she wants to lay and also ate again this afternoon. Not much but 5 or 6 bites of egg. I do not know when she last layed as I have multiple girls that free range all day.

I had a duck that had an egg stuck to her ovary. She couldn't have laid it if she tried and the only way I knew she had an egg stuck inside was by an x-ray. I paid a lot of money to try to have it removed, but she didn't make it as they had to break the egg to remove it. I would recommend an x-ray if you can find an avian vet or even a stool sample as they can tell you alot by the stool. Found out my chicken had ovarian cancer, heart and lung issues and a parasite all by her poop. She's still hanging in there and looking better than my other sick chicken with EYP. Hope your hen will be ok!

I recently went through this with one of my pullets. She wasnt even walking she was in so much pain. Shed just sit all day. Wouldnt eat or drink. For about 3 days I had to force her to drink and I mixed nutridrench in eggs with tums, magnesium and vitamin D. I also soaked her and put a little olive oil in her vent. She had 2 episodes of laying soft shell/shelless eggs and finally was better by about the 4/5 day. I have also given her cipro as I had some left over antibiotics from a surgery I recently had in the event of any infection forming. Good luck. I know I was stressing really hard over it. if you have any tums I would certinaly give that a go

Thank you so much for your comments. She is now eating like crazy right now. I have her in a dog crate in my mud room and when I went to walk by her she clucked at me so I got her some layer pellets and small amount of scratch. Still not drinking much water and no egg as of today. I have soaked her twice yesterday and once this morning. I gave her half a tums ground up but not sure how much she ate. I will make her some scrambled eggs in the morning and put the tums on it. How do you get your hen to take the tums?

What were the symptoms of your hen with EYP?

I had a hen with EYP after a few shellless eggs. She started showing very subtle symptoms late Friday afternoon and was on the brink of death by Monday morning. She was VERY weak... stumbling, panting, bloated and huddled/curled up in a nest box.

I felt it was really important for her to consume all of what I was giving her as she was in a pretty bad situation. I didnt want to guess so I crushed up all of the pills I was giving her together and put a little water in it to make it a paste. I then syringe fed it to her. It got some fluids in her and I know that she took all of what I gave her. You could also make a paste and soak it up with a piece of bread and offer her the piece of bread. As long as she ears it it's less struggle for.both you and her. Good luck !
