I have 4 pullets and 2 of them started laying eggs today. A third pullet is acting funny, she is panting and went back to her roost midday. This evening she is walking around a little but stops and rests. She is still panting some, her tail is low and she kind of squints her eyes and holds still for 5 minutes at a time. Do you think she is egg bound or could this just be a difficult first egg?

I would guess its just because its her first time... A few of my girs did teh squat before they finnaly layed... I would keep an eye on her and maybe give her a few treats for the extra calories she must be burning...

You might also go ahead and start looking up on the forums what to do for an egg bound hen just in case. Warm bath I know is one and someone mentioned putting a bit of oil on the vent but you would need to verify that. This way if it is worst case scenario and she is egg bound you are ready and maybe can be a bit more proactive before she struggles too long. Just an idea.

I spent the day wringing my hands with worry when my first girl was trying to lay. Finally i decided to leave her and Ma nature to it. I would run out for every egg song... na-da. then the following day, I got the egg.
Then i emailed everybody.

SUE!!!!!!! OOOooOOoOo MY! o MY!! o MY!!!, these are THE most BEAUTIFUL shells i have ever seen!
I can not thank you enough! You may have guessed that your generous gift arrived today.
I know now , I will have to talk my husband into another coop...I MUST have an OLIVE egger or TWO! If only i had known what a difference in the green would be, i couldve used them as shading on every split in the leaf...alas tis too late. I am so excited now, for the freeze that is predicted for next week.. The weather will keep me inside and I will definetly be making progress on the desk. I would like to encourage YOU to start saving your shells for yourself or others , that may like to make a mosaic. These shells are an exquisite color and there are many artists that would LOVE to use them... you could actually sell them! Many eggshell artists [ i have recently found a mosaic site w/ such talented artists:http://www.mosaicandstainedglass.or...1899e53330b936b70c99d7bb2&topic=5066.msg95022 . Even if you dont want to sell, you will like seeing all the different objects they use eggshell for. [ES. abbreviated there] and when you see, if you go there, the word TESSARE that would be mosaic speak for what gets glued down... lol hahahaha i just learned that word from the others in that site forum. I will be in touch again Thank YOu so much,
Melissa
