I am a loss here and hoping I can get some advice.
Tuesday afternoon I noticed a problem with one of my chickens. From what I was seeing of her behavior cross referenced with searching online, I strongly suspected she was egg bound. So that night I gave her a long soak in a warm bath. I tried feeling around down there but can't seem to feel anything suspect, but I am also not a chicken vet and we've only had these girls for a year and a half (I still feel new).
Yesterday, same thing so I soaked her again.
Today, more of the same so I decided to the vet we go. The only vet I can find that sees chickens doesn't seem to half assed know what to do with them. I brought a couple with bumblefoot a couple months back and all he did was prescribe them meds they should have never had (baytril) and they only got worse, we are still battling that).
So he takes her temp and barely feels around her and says she has a high fever which would not be caused by being egg bound, he thinks it's peritonitis. I didn't know at the spot what normal temp for a chicken was so I trusted him. Now I get home and see normal range is 105-107, and she was 106. He talked like at 107 they go neuro and in shock brain damage.
So anyway he prescribes meds and I say no baytril (he was annoyed with me at this point and making rude comments) so he comes up with something else to give her by injection, for 5 days. He gives her the first. Well now I am home, I see her temp is just NORMAL, the new med is another med I am reading should never be given to an egg layer (it also shows it's used to treat resp. infections), and I am truly afraid she is still just egg bound.
What do I do?!?!? I literally feel helpless only having access to a local vet that seems to know nothing about how to deal with this stuff.
