Hello, I am posting this because I am looking for assistance about one of my pigeons. Last night I noticed one of the girls in the corner of the cage very fluffed up with her eyes closed. I took her out and noticed her vent was full of poop, looked like diarrhea. I cleaned and gently cut the tip of the feathers just to clean it up and make it easier for her. As I was cleaning her, I palpated her vent to see what was wrong and I believe I felt an egg at the vent. I imagined that the poop must be from her trying to lay the egg and it might have been bothering her. I placed her back in the cage to give her more time to see if she passes the egg on her own. The next morning (today) I woke up early to go check on her. She is still very fluffed and looks down like last night. I decided to put some mineral oil around the butt to see if it helps her push it out and I went to buy oyster shells as I had ran out a couple of days before and was waiting to be in the area to get some more. When I put the shells she picks at it softly not with much enthusiasm which is not usual. I also noticed that she isn't eating, she pecks like she wants to but doesn't grab anything. She is in a separate cage with the oyster shells, food, and her water which I added vitamin D3 supplement so she can absorb the calcium faster. Is there something else I can do to help her pass the egg. I have never had to deal with this situation before and just want to make her feel as good as possible for her to pass the egg. I am also worried that I might be confusing these symptoms with possibly something else like canker because of the diarrhea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and welcomed!!

I'm sorry your having this happen to you.

It does sound like an egg bound hen. My only suggestions for you is keep her hydrated, and try to get her to eat. Offer her a warm bath. Other than that, I dont know what to say. Some people have performed surgery on an egg bound bird. I personally don't trust myself to do that.

Best of luck.

Hello I tried doing all that, even tried to force feed but nothing was working. After I left her in her cage for a while with the temperature high to keep her warm, I even stopped feeling the egg after a while or at least what I though was an egg. I gave her the 50mg metronidazole in case it was something like canker because I noticed she spit some water up in the afternoon. Just once when she tried to eat. Last night she passed away, I'm honestly so confused about what happened with her. She went from fine and eating like crazy from one day to another. Thank you for the advice I greatly appreciate it, Ill have to keep a big eye on them for the next few days, make sure it wasn't contagious.
