Baby pigeon with broken wing and leg made it through the night. It was bleeding so I used flour to get it to stop but now I noticed its leg is stuck to its abdomen. Is it safe to give them a warm bath to clean them off?? I tried getting him to have some smashed egg yolk but he does seem to be in the mood for it. He did try wobbling around but couldn’t bc of his leg, so I put him back into this face mask I’m using as a makeshift nest to get him to stop wiggling. He seems exhausted and nothing opens up for hours :(

He needs to stay warm. So may put in box with a heating pad on mild to medium heat, have overlying padding to avoid hot spots.

Don’t worry about the dried blood for now. First thing is hydration. Give Pedialyte or hydration drink (like liquid IV) in a syringe or dropper. Put a small drop at the tip. If he doesn’t open his beak for more, gently use the tip from the side to see if you can nudge open, but do not force the beak open. You can also stroke under the beak gently with your finger as well to see if he’ll open his beak.

Hopefully this will hold you over until wildlife rehab opens. If not and you have to care for home a little longer, recommend Kaytee exact bird formula (pet stores have in stock), thin consistency at first and may thicken as needed.

Leave the dried blood alone for now. Warmth is critical and we do not want to dislodge the clot and start bleeding again.

Good luck and praying for the little one!

Thank you, I’ve called our local 24 hour vet and they said the hospitals around here aren’t aloud to take in wild life and our nearest rehab center doesn’t open until Wednesday so I’ll try to find that bird formula. Right now I’ve been using a squeeze paintbrush as a baby bottle and I have warm water, sugar and boiled yolk in it. I’m giving it to him a drop at a time to get him to swallow it since he’s refusing to eat on his own or anything thicker than that. I’m sure he can’t stand me but I am trying

I got him the katee exact formula and a kitten feeding bottle, I got his crop pretty full though no where near as full as his parents were able to, I’ll try to get him to have more in about an hour if he seems more up for eating, thank you for your advice :)
