Oops I just noticed you already took care of it Gibsterl. Hope your hen is back to normal soon. Also, I would probably add probiotics before giving an antibiotic, but it is hard to say if it is necessary.

thanks all-she is now out in the run...still a little punky I think but much better than several hours ago-I started some probiotic as it can't hurt right? and hopefully she will continue to improve!

Have you ever tried Kefir? It's a probiotic fermented milk beverage. I culture my kefir grains in raw organic milk from grass fed cows and my chickens LOVE it.

Kefir is an excellent probiotics that I happen to drink a lot of myself. I make superfood smoothies out of them and also give them to my chickens to keep them healthy. Maybe I've warded off illnesses with it but I'm not 100% sure. All I know is they don't usually get sick. I am however dealing with some sort of something right now with my rooster being pale, loose skin around the eyes, eye color is now kinda yellow, where it was orange before...I think.

I have been dealing with shell-less eggs and thin shells in a couple of my chickens. I lost one about a week and half ago that I didn't check her in time, and she died. I think she was egg bound and couldn't push it out. She was already stiff when I came home from being out and found her dead. She should have taken advice from my SS that can always seem to pass the shell-less eggs on her own.

I hope your chickens are doing better. My chicken farmer friend told me to make a green slurry and add that to the chicken feed with kefir to give them calcium from food. In the green slurry, she had me gather plantain, dandelions, nettles and lambs quarters. I don't have any chickweed to add to it yet. She gave me some and said it was awesome in helping keep the shells hard and is super healthy. She gave me some to transplant, so I'm hoping they will take. If not, the others will go to seed and then I have to wait for them to grow.

If you have a raw milk source of clean milk, you may want to get some kefir grains (they look like little cauliflowers that grow) to make your own homemade kefir.

Thanks for the info....sounds like a great thing to feed them. So sorry about your hen and hope your roo improves. As for my hen she looks great today, eating drinking and hanging out with the rest of the flock.
