egg bound

Thanks for that.

If she doesn't roost it is probably because she is not laying regularly; there seems to be a hierarchy in place with chooks; if you lay you are on the top roost, if you don't you are underneath or 'below' the ones that do. Mine do it when they go off the lay for any reason or are under the weather.

Other than that, she can't get up there.

What breed is she?

BTW: I get mine to lay by giving them wheatgrass juice; three squirts with an eye dropper down their throats for about three days, works a treat for mine. But it has to be fresh and a 'shot' lasts for three days in the fridge before you throw it out and get more fresh juice.

I know we went through this on another thread, but I'm asking again, please do not advise people to shoot shots/squirts down chickens throats. It can go into their lungs and drown them - or could choke them - or could put air or too much liquid into their crops. Chickens do not need shots of wheatgrass. They are omnivores and love meat so if you want to do any special type of treat - instead of squirting wheatgrass down their throats - please just toss them a few meal worms or crickets.

I know you disagreed with me and said that it hasn't harmed your chickens and that's great but in the cases you are advicing this, they are new posters and new to chickens and I would not recommend that anyone open a chicken's mouth and force a medicine dropper down it and force three dropper fulls of anything - including the garlic water you also suggested in the mornings nor the wheatgrass you suggest for evenings. They certainly don't need either to lay eggs.

Hi ruth, thanks for your posting. As I said on the other thread, you need to do some homework on wheatgrass and garlic (aka. natural remedies). I appreciate what you are saying, but let's face it, if a hen is dying in your arms you have to do something, and fast. Because it's not like they are going to drink something out of a bowl for you because you say (or think) it's good for them, now is it? For newbies with problem hens, who want to use a natural remedy over a nasty - expensive - antibiotic or other medicine, squirt your natural remedy INTO THEIR MOUTH and then check that they swallow it.

Here's a promising site to check out:

ditto Ruths post...
birds do not have an epiglottis to "close off" the hole that leads to the airways... this is why extreme caution is always advised when helping a bird to drink (it is best to dribble along their beak if you are inexperienced)
a "dropperful" SHOT into their mouth is taking a huge risk and if the bird is so bad off it is "dying in your arms" (and if it is so ill that it cannot drink on its own i.e. SWALLOW) then the risk of the liquid being aspirated into the lungs is even more likely ... even a small amount can cause all kinds of problems and once it occurs there is no way to reverse it.

Matilda is a black cochin banty
she is eating well and perky
our weather here is 18-25 degrees
so I thought due to the cold she wont lay
untill the weather warms up. And after what she went through
I rather she rest.

If you have an water atomizer, the kind that do not use heat, this works really well. I keep one from when my kids were little. We hated the steam ones becuase the water vapors made such a darn mess in the room. We bought a vaporizer that uses a process that just atomizes the water. You can use this on your hens without the worry of boiling thier little butts.

so helpfull
Little Matdilda is doing great
I had no need to force feed her.
she did drop the one egg and
it was all a crinkle I tossed it.
I have her now on high protein mix with pellets
from Dumor.since our weather has been cold.
Would a warm water spray from a spray bottle work if this should happen again?
