I have a chicken that appears to be egg bound. I have given her baths, applied hemroid cream and tried to feel for an egg with no success. However after every attempt to feel for and egg what apears to be slightly cooked egg yolk and whites and grit comes out. Also she poops a little. We keep her in a box until she gets better, 3 or 4 days of treatment. She hasn’t laid any new eggs and after a week of doing bettering she is sick again. She has an appetite especially for meal worms. My husband is concerned that long term her body will become a saminela incubator and she will make us all sick. I hate to put down our pet chicken if there isn’t something I can do. Any advice???

Welcome to BYC. It sounds like your hen is suffering from a reproductive disorder—salpingitis, or inflammation of the oviduct. There is no cure, and most hens die of it eventually. Some vets will try antibiotics when symptoms first appear to help prolong life, but usually when symptoms are seen such as passing the egg-like material or lash eggs, it is too far advanced. Lash eggs are from infection. Since it sounds like she is having trouble passing the lash egg, I would give her some a crushed up calcium tablet or Tums, and then soak her in some warm water just covering her bottom to try and help her pass it. If she seems to be suffering and cannot pass the egg, since this has been going on for several days, you may want to think about putting her down. Here is some reading about salpingitis:
