I accidentally had found a Youtube video first about it, before coming here. And some people said their poultry had died from it.
Good questions.I'm wondering how you guys with the chicken hens got your girls into the baths/pools etc? Because with ducks they'd want to be in the water anyway, but my chickens hate water. Did you do a special trick for this?
And if a duck or chicken has this problem once, does that mean it will come up again like collicky horse stuff?
Will a liquid diet only for a few days also help with this issue?
And how long do you have to solve it, typically before a hen dies from this?
A hen that is Egg Bound - meaning there is an egg in the shell gland/vagina that is blocking vent, yes, they can die within 24 hours. The egg is blocking the intestines and the bird is unable to eliminate waste - Egg Binding is a true emergency and needs to be addressed quickly. https://the-chicken-chick.com/chicken-egg-binding-causes-symptoms/
How to get them in water? Some put their hen in the kitchen sink, a laundry room sink. You can use a bucket (like Lowes/Home Depot bucket). I like to keep a rubber dish pan. You can find them at WalMart, Dollar General or online. For Ducks, I've seen folks use the same methods or they fill their bathtub.
I've never had a problem getting a hen in the dish pan, you just want to go slow - if it's slick, put a towel or some shelf liner in the bottom of your pan so they feel safe. Once they feel the warm water, they start to relax.
It's very possible that a hen (or duck) could continue to have a problem with egg binding. Sometimes it may just be that the egg was too big, other times there may be a condition or illness that is causing the egg to become stuck - evaluating diet may help - read the article referenced above.
Doubtful a liquid diet will help with egg binding - see the article above for some causes. Sometimes a crop issue may accompany egg binding so fluids only may need to be administered. Keeping a bird hydrated is key when dealing with any issue.
Hope this clarifies a few things for you.
