I have a 7 month old Rhode Rock called Delilah, she has been laying rather large eggs from the offset for about a six weeks. About 10 days ago she stopped laying, here in Britain we had a change in weather from hot to very wet and much cooler temperatures so was not overly concerned. On Thursday she laid an egg it was WIERD, at first I got excited because it appeared white and thought my white leghorn has laid her first egg but on closer inspection I noticed that the white was like an all over coating almost like gritty chalk and underneath was the regular egg she had been laying as the chalky stuff scratched off. The next day she didn't lay again then today I was outside gardening and noticed that she had gone in her nest box, she was there a whole hour, she came out but there was no egg, a little while later she went back in and sat there for half hour, still no egg, this happened another time but this time when she came out she stood in the door to the coop and sang the loudest egg song for what seemed like ages!!! so cute. I was convinced she was saying "I made an egg la la la laa" when I checked....no egg

No egg has been laid by Delilah at all today but I'm sure she wanted to poor thing. Is she egg bound do you think? I was wondering whether this chalky egg thing may be harder to pass and its perhaps happened again to her? She is acting normally otherwise, eating, drinking and pooping normally, red faced and comb etc and mixing well with the other chickens.
Any advice would be great

I wouldn't panic. :) Egg bound chickies normally ACT like they're egg bound; waddling around uncomfortably, not eating/drinking much, listlessness... My girls take their sweet time laying eggs; sometimes it takes a few hours to get it out.

And as for the chalky egg...I've gotten that type of egg twice from my chickens in the past. At first I was like, woah, and was a little worried. But nothing happened, and they continued to lay normal, creamy brown eggs.

They haven't shown any sign of sickness or anything. I'm thinking maybe it was some sort of extra calcium thing? I really can't say, but I can tell you that my girls are still very healthy, and it's been months.

I'd give your girl a few more hours before I got worried. Seeing how she's going in and out of the nest...it does look like she wants to lay something. I'm pretty sure the weather is what has caused her to take this little break. Tell her to stop messing around and get back to work!

Good luck!
