I have an egg bound hen... I noticed her yesterday trying to lay late in the afternoon, which was a little strange, most of mine are morning layers. I checked again in the morning, she was in the box clucking. Not really straining, and I wasn't sure if it was her or another hen, I have 3 marans , 2 look alike and I can't tell them apart.... this afternoon when I checked she was in a different box, but appeared to be straining again, I assumed it was the same hen... I picked her up with no fuss, which isn't normal for my marans, She isn't generally friendly and all my marans will protest loudly if you bother them while laying.

I've soaked her in warm water, oiled her vent with a syringe of olive oil She is now resting on a heating pad covered with a damp towel. After oiling she made a small whitish stinky poo. I couldn't feel any egg, and pressing on her upset her and I didn't want to risk breaking the egg inside her. She's out of the bath for about an hour now. She is still damp, but the heating pad is keeping her warm. How long before I try soaking her again and what do I do if that doesn't work?

Thanks!

Sounds like you are doing a good job. Have you tried putting on a tight surgical glove, some ky jelly and inserting your index finger? Sometimes the egg may be farther down the canal. If you can feel the egg, you may need to turn it right side...the egg maybe sideways. Gently push it right.

Also, feel between her legs and around her pelvis on the outside. If you can feel an egg, sometimes you can manuver it from the outside, gently rubbing it toward the vent.

I hope she passes that egg soon.

Try & lube the egg inside her. What happens is the egg drys out inside her & she can't push it out.
