Egg Bound?

Hello, I Have a ISA Brown that died recently, and my mom thought she died of being "Egg Bound". Me and my mom looked at the ISA Browns vent, and it was big like a ball, but squishy, so maybe she was Egg Bound but the eggshell was soft? Do you think she could have been Egg Bound? She was covered in lice, so ether she was Egg Bound, or her blood was getting sucked out by lice.

Whether or not the lice killed her, it's definitely something that needs to be addressed within the rest of the flock. Try some diatomaceous earth sprinkled around and that will help get rid of them.

Lice don't suck blood, mites do. Though they will drink blood from punctures or broken blood feathers.

All poultry lice have chewing mouthparts and feed on dry skin scales, scab tissue, and feather parts. They also feed on blood when the host bird’s skin or feather quills are punctured.

She could have been egg bound. It's hard to say. You would have noticed symptoms though. They don't die in hours.. You would have noticed her acting strange. My girl who was egg bound kept pushing and acted really sick.

DE Does not rid them of lice. It will help prevent it (but not always) and it definitely won't get rid of a huge problem.

Best bet is to use poultry dust that your feed store carries.

And foxy2320, my mom tried putting ashes in our chicken run, for them to have a dust bath in the ashes to get rid of the lice, and it worked. But we moved our coop to a different spot, and we never did the ash thing.

This is very likely to be the reason. Egg binding is very hard to cure. I give any suspected egg binding girls a really warm bath and place them in a steam room (which is a huge pot of boiling water, rack over that pot, in a colander with a towel in it and a box over top. I monitor them to make sure they don't get too hot.
Also antibiotics to prevent infection.

I got the egg out of my girl, but she had a prolapsed vent and a uterine infection and died as well.

No problem.

One of the most effective broad-spectrum insecticides is permethrin. Permethrin has a significant residual activity, thus making it ideal for treating poultry housing and equipment. At reduced concentrations, permethrin can also be applied directly to the bird.

I have also used Sevin with very good effects. It is however, not recommended for chickens anymore.

Have a beautiful Leghorn, who hasnt begun laying eggs, born 5/28/12 and is acting puffed up, and listliss.. severe injury to the rear, and all kinds of juice coming out.. is this egg bound?

Will she live?
