egg breakers

My Bardrocks just started pecking the eggs again, I too have tried all the tricks, so the mustard sounds like a plan I will let you know how it works. This web site is the best place to com to get help with your flock. Thank you

Hi,i'm new,my hens are eating eggs,i just read the mustard remedy. I got these chickens 2nd hand,so I don't know if this is a new behavior or not.any words of wisdom is appreciated!

Ceramic eggs can help deter them because they peck but can't break them.

Some hens eat eggs because of a protein or calcium deficiency. Feeding a higher protein feed and feeding some high protein treats liked canned fish, cottage cheese, and scrambled eggs can help, as well as keeping out a dish of oyster shells.

thank you! I feed them 16% crumble,i guess that's not enough..can I get high protein crumbles Where I get my feed now( tractor supply) as I said,i'm new at this

Most layer ration is 16%. Higher production hens can become deficient on it, especially if anything extra is fed with it. I like one with 18-22% protein. I use both a non medicated grower for my bantams because it's a crumble, and my large breeds eat a pelleted all flock, with the oyster shells free choice.

When a chicken becomes deficient they only have two choices, their eggs or each other.

Some egg eating becomes a chronic habit, and some is just a need for more protein and the egg eating will stop.

Mustard just makes a mess in most cases.

Most TSC carry Purina Flock Raiser....it's worked well for me for 3-4 years now.

My Feeding Notes: I like to feed a flock raiser/grower/finisher 20% protein crumble full time to all ages and genders, as non-layers(chicks, males and molting birds) do not need the extra calcium that is in layer feed and chicks and molters can use the extra protein. Makes life much simpler to store and distribute one type of chow that everyone can eat. I do grind up the crumbles (in the blender) for the chicks for the first week or so.

The higher protein crumble also offsets the 8% protein scratch grains and other kitchen/garden scraps I like to offer. I adjust the amounts of other feeds to get the protein levels desired with varying situations.

Calcium should be available at all times for the layers, I use oyster shell mixed with rinsed, dried, crushed chicken egg shells in a separate container.

Animal protein (a freshly trapped mouse, mealworms, a little cheese - beware the salt content, meat scraps) is provided once in while and during molting and/or if I see any feather eating.
