Hello,

I walked outside a while ago to find my best hen Rosie standing with a soft shelled egg hanging out of her vent. The egg did break as she was trying to pass it, so I know some of it is still inside her. I give my hens crushed egg shells and oyster shells, so I’m not quite sure what the problem is here. I found another soft shelled egg in the nesting box a few days ago too. But my main question is not why, but what do I do with her right now?
Right now I have her in a tub of warm water (no epsom salt because I don’t have any). But what else should I do for her? I know an egg breaking inside a hen can be very bad. So I want to do everything in my power to help her.

Thanks in advance.

Were you able to get the membrane out?

I'd start giving her Extra Calcium asap. Calcium Citrate+D3 can be found at walmart, cvs, etc. Give 1 tablet daily for a week.

Yes, I agree, if the membrane broke while still inside, it's of great concern. This can cause infection. Do you have antibiotics on hand? Amoxicillin is good choice. I'd start her on ABX as soon as possible. You can order here: https://jedds.com/products/amoxicillin-10-powder?_pos=1&_sid=bf6f88dcf&_ss=r

Yes. It was hanging out so I pulled it out. I will pick some up after work. Thank you so much! She seems fine this morning but I know everything could go downhill fast…
