I had an egg bound Ameraucana she was all but dead when I found her, stiff legs, ruffled feathers, heavy labored breathing. Massage with mineral oil and a warm bath on her vent area didn't seem to help, So I gloved up and went up to see if I could help , the egg was way to large, and good and stuck as well as a hard shell. after a while the egg broke, She was relieved and I massaged as much as possible out and separated her from the others.
After about 3 days she had the leg back under her. 4 days she was perching again.
I offered chick starter crumbles with DE in hopes to help clean out the pipes.
She is acting normal now eating and drinking well when is it safe to know that she is not infected and can join the others without infection?
Can anyone advise?

Hello,

When looking at signs of infection you will want to closely examine the chickens waste, feathers and general attitude. If she is acting fine, has normal looking waste and has not lost any amount of feathers you should be okay to place her with your other birds.

If she has lost any amount of feathers, has very loose stool and/or is acting funny around you or in general I would keep her separated for a minimum of 5-6 weeks or until she is acting better.

Based on the information you provided, I would not be too concerned about any infection which she might have developed. Generally, chickens are healthy birds who have specific signs of irritation (caused by infection). If she was sick you would probably know...

looking at her looks like I need to bath her again and get her cleaned up she is acting good....there seems to not be any loose feathers ... she hasnt laid any eggs since but I think because I have had her on starter crumbles.... I think I will give her some reg laying feed tomorrow and see what happens .... thank you so much for your info.... your great

ok I have her on regular laying feed poop is normal but a shade of green , and still no egg think there is a problem there? Its been at least 3 wks ..... what do you think hmmmm come to think of it Im only getting 3-4 eggs from the other 12 chickens ... even from my loyal egg layers are not laying .... think its my feed? I dropped it down to 16 % but still is layer mash pellets .... maybe I am making too much of this but I cant help but be concerned....

Hello,

Since you are not getting many eggs from your other chickens I would suspect there is a problem you have not yet identified. You said you changed their feed...I would switch it back and see if you notice any changes.

Furthermore, you can find supplements at most feed supply stores. These supplements are a powder you mix with their water. It can help a lot when you have something off like this.

Lastly, are you providing oyster shell? Sometimes too much or too little can cause problems in the egg laying department. Secondly, the same is true with other treats. Make sure their primary diet is just their feed...

Hope this helps...

How old are your chickens?
What is your location? You can put your location in your profile, it sometimes really helps folks give advice.
Describe type and size of coop, run and management...pics are always helpful.

It could be the egg bound bird is still just stressed out, it can take weeks or months for them to begin laying again. Plus she is separated from her flock, can be another kind of stress.....reintroducing her to the flock may cause more stress, best to get it over with as soon as possible. If you think she may be infected form the broken egg and oral or injectable antibiotic might be a good plan.

Egg production varies according to many things, some things are obvious to us, some are only known to chickens.
