Last night I found that egg has broken inside hen. Her cloaca is not very distended so i had to wait until she was straining to enter. I used a curved hemostat. After about 2 hours of removing I couldnt feel anymore inside with tip of instrument I stopped to give us both a rest and observe overnight Shes eating and drinking and I haven't seen her strain. Other than another digital exam what else can I do? Shell was pretty deep inside It looked like a scanty amount. Tiny fragments. What do vets do to remove shell from a non distended cloaca? Thanks.

Sorry about your hen. I cannot say what vets use to get the egg and shell out, since I have not experienced a hard shell egg breaking inside. I have seen a shell-less egg come out broken. Are her eggs usually large, or has she had problems in the past with stuck eggs or shell problems? Having eggs break inside the oviduct can cause an increased risk of infection. Some use antibiotics afterward, but most of those have to be ordered online, and used with an appropriate egg withdrawal time. Make sure that she is receiving crushed oyster shell and layer feed that has enough calcium to help the muscles move the eggs out of the vent.

My vet here used a bare finger. I've done the same. The reasoning behind this is you can feel any broken shell remnants. Bear in mind where the shell is formed and the curve on the oviduct just above.
I flush the oviduct with water as did my vet. It's a risk. You may flood some shell pieces higher into the oviduct.
