Egg Candling Question

Hi All,

I am new to incubating eggs and have a question and was hoping someone could help me out. I have a few eggs that are at day 17 and when I candle them they appear black throughout. I can make out the air pocket easily but the rest is pretty well black. I do not have a fancy egg candler just a flashlight and:/ cardboard with a circle cut out. Also my eggs are brown so they are a little harder to see. I was wondering if this means that the chicks are alive or not. Thanks for your help.
