what should you wash your eggs with and how should they be placed in the carton

Do not wash your eggs. It will force bacteria through the shell. If they look ok, just put them into the carton, narrow, pointy side down.
If eggs are dirty, try using a very fine sandpaper to wipe the dirt off. If that doesn't work, dampen a corner of a paper towel or rag & wipe the dirty spots only. Let thoroughly dry before placing in frig.
