Hi
My hen has been sitting on her eggs for 24 days. I've read that it takes 21 days for eggs to hatch, can it take longer. She has already chucked an egg out that had been rotten, but I'm assuming the other eggs are viable still as she hasn't got off them.
I am probably a little bit impatient by trying very hard just to leave her to it.
As anybody got any comments or advise?

Try candling during the night? I've never hatched under a broody, but have heard of it taking longer. If she's getting up to eat, drink, and poop, the eggs can cool off a bit and it could slow development. How many eggs is she sitting on?

Well after a week of waiting I got really impatient. I did try candling the eggs but I couldn't see anything, couldn't tell if there was chicken or not but I didn't see the air sack at the base of the egg either. An they did start do stink and some of them were seeping. I cracked them all (from a distance, with a long stick) and they all were rotten. So lesson learned I think I will learn to candle them early and see if they are fertile with in the first week or what ever it is.

Problem now is I've still got a broody hen who even without eggs is happy to sit, but I'm sure she'll get over it eventually.

Thanks for the advice
