Hi there, I'm pretty new to chickens. The finishing touches are being placed on our coop and I've had 4 hens 6-8m old for only a few weeks now. I noticed that one of the hens has a bald/bleeding spot on her back. When I got them, I saw this but it got better. Today it's bad again and one of the other hens is following her around pecking at the spot! Should I separate them? If so how? I don't want one to be miss placed. Any info or insight would be helpful. Thanks!

How much room do the birds have while their coop is being built? It's possible they are crowded and/or bored. Have you checked them over for mites? Also, what are you feeding them? Upping their protein could be helpful (cooked eggs, meal worms, cottage cheese). You can use Blu-Kote to hide the bare spot on the one that is being pecked. Is there anything "different" about the one that is being pecked (different breed, color, size, etc.). Pinless peepers can be used on the one guilty of doing the pecking.

Hi and welcome to BYC. I'd suggest separating her from the flock until you have the bleeding cleared up - chickens are merciless at the sight of blood. As NFLChick says, it would be good to consider the possible reasons why the issue has re-occurred and she has made some great suggestions.

You may want to get her a hen apron to cover her back. They are generally used to allow their back to heal after roosters have run rough shod overbreeding them. If your flock isn't too large, I would advise putting an apron on all of them. That will confuse them enough, that she will not appear different.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined the flock! Most of the time when chickens see blood they will start pecking. Chickens can sometimes become cannibals. It would be best to separate her from the flock.
