I posted this in the New Members section. It is suggested I cross post here:
In my intro I told y'all about my 2 Pekins, 1 male, 1 female. She started laying and my 10 year old started naming the eggs! We went to Ruckers and got the cheap Still Air incubator for my daughter to try her hand at poultry farming. I really didn't expect the experiment to work...I mean new life in my living room? The first 6 eggs were set and about a week ago we culled the clutch to only one egg (confident the other eggs were not viable). Day 25 and that egg is making scratching noises! I know not to turn it any more. I have a box all ready with a brooder lamp for maybe Sunday or Monday (day 28). Here's where I probably made an error: we set another clutch of eggs 9 days later. All 8 are viable so far. Their hatch day is May 22, '13. I get the idea I need to move the lone survivor and not let it hatch in the incubator with the later batch. Contamination? Humidity problems? Also, I need to get hubby to build a duck run or something. We are going to increase our population real quick. I just didn't expect the success rate we see with batch 2. I reckon that's not a question. I'm just so excited. If you have any advice, I'd be glad to hear it. I'll let y'all know the outcomes.
