hey folks. my girls are starting to lay and im planning to sell what we don't eat. in Maine there is a law that the eggs must be washed before selling them. what do you all use to wash yours? i know washing isnt ideal but was curious if theres some homemade wash i can make instead of buying something. would just plain water and a clean towel be ok? thx!

That would be fine. I use warm water and dawn soap. I give away eggs like crazy in personalized egg cartons. The last thing I want to do is give my friends and family dirty eggs!

I don’t wash my eggs I sell, feathers and sand makes the city folks smile !!

Washing a few and not all of them makes them last different lengths of time , I scratch it dry rub off poop , no soap or vinegar for me .

With sand in the boxes and no poppy layers my eggs are usually clean

If the eggs are poopy, definitely use a little dawn or vinegar. I like to keep a spray bottle with white vinegar AND dawn in it (soapy vinegar). Spray the poopy spot and wipe it off and then just a little water to rinse. Remember that when you wash eggs, you wash off the bloom, so it's better to refrigerate eggs once they have been washed. If the eggs are not poopy, I do not recommend washing them. Keeping the bloom on the egg makes the shell less porous, which protects the egg from germs entering through the shell. Once you wash off the bloom, bacteria can pass more easily through the shell.

What do the regulations say about how to wash and with what?
If you're not selling the general public, you may not have to wash them at all.

they just say to wash them. no specifics. vinegar sounds like a good idea.
