Friend collects my first eggs while we're on vacation....leaves them on my counter top in a closed up house (85+ days) so I can see them when I come home

I've refrigerated them since - but I'm a little afraid to eat them. Of course, they're in a carton with the other eggs I've collected since....I think I know which ones they are *sigh*

Toss 'em?

I personally wouldn't risk it and would just toss them.

Okay! Tossed them! Crossing my fingers I got the right ones.....*sigh*

What my folks do when they have a dubious egg is they sit it in a sink or bowl full of water. If it floats to the top of the water, it's bad and it goes in the compost. If it sinks, it's good, and if it kind of stands on one end so that the skinny end touches the bottom of the sink but the fat end floats, it's just an old egg that is not as fresh as it could be.

Also when preparing to cook with eggs--be they dubious or not--it's always a good idea to crack them into a small bowl or other dish so they can be inspected prior to cooking. This will give you the chance to decide whether or not you're comfortable eating an egg before it ends up in the cookie dough or the frying pan.
