I have been doing a breeding project for about 2 years. Recently I lost nearly every bird I've ever produced. Only one pullet I kept to breed of last years babies survived. Her mother was a gray/blue Ameracurana and her dad was an olive egger who had a Ayam Cemani grandfather. I am breeding for large fibromelanistic birds who lay blue or green eggs. This roosters female children have always lay blue or green eggs, including 2 with the same hen as mother. But alas, they are all dead.
I was delighted to see this one survivor sitting in a nest recently and I began stalking her basically, eager to get my hands on her first egg. Imagine my disappointment to see the egg is a very very pale shade of grey. I'm assuming this is a throwback to the AC genes but it has never happened to me before. I was hoping someone more intelligent and knowledgeable in genetics could explain this to me so I can avoid it happening again while I rebuild my program.
In the photo the upper left egg is a pea green, from a cross between Ameracurana and Brahma. Beside it is the new surprise egg. Next is an egg from her aunt, the one marked "Bossy" is from her mother. The egg to the left of Bossys egg is the closest I have to true white, from a game hen, the dark egg is a marans. The peanut butter jar (and the eggs besides the new one)are for color reference. The other pictures of the chicken is the girl in question.
Thanks in advance if you can shed some light on this for me.
