Has anyone had any experience with egg drop syndrome ?I never noticed a decline in eggs really. But I did notice that one chicken was consistently laying a soft egg. My husband culled her because no matter how much oyster shells or egg shells we gave she never laid a normal egg. He even found a very hard shelled spoiled egg inside her. Well now I'm after seeing another couple of soft shelled eggs. I just watched my RIR lay one. Kinda came out in a splash and the chickens went crazy to eat it. Then I saw one running with a slimy white soft shell in its beak. Any advice?

Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry about your hen. Finding a hard shelled egg inside, I assume in the abdomen(?)/or Oviduct(?) sounds like Internal Laying. Do you happen to have photos of the necropsy/what you found?

What do you feed, including treats?
Do you provide oyster shell free choice?

There are many causes of soft-shelled eggs, sometimes dietary changes can correct the issue. A few other causes can be parasites (internal and external), certain respiratory diseases and genetics.

Sorry we don't have any pictures but I do have oyster shells there for free choice. I give sunflower seeds and peanuts for treats ( mostly to get them back in their coop) I am feeding a layer pellet food. I believe it is shur-grain. They all seem healthy. No signs of any illness or distress. I have dewormed them about 4 weeks ago. I have never seen any signs of worms. My chickens free range in a fenced yard so not much exposure to wildlife. I'm kinda at a loss. I'll keep an eye out. Maybe it's a coincidence and just random. I have added new chickens to the flock but I hatched the eggs myself from shipped eggs. Thanks for the link. Very informative.
