So I have an Aracuna who has up untill recently been a good layer. She has now started to drop her eggs from her perch and they are super soft and she is eating them. I have given her lots of oyster grit and good feed. I was thinking maybe of supplementing her with vitamins. How do I stop her dropping the eggs and eating them. the other 2 chooks are laying as normal. there eggs are not being eaten. Any thoughts- she seems fairly healthy and free ranges most of the day. thanks deb

I think what happens is - before I wake up -she is on her perch and drops a soft shell egg into her poop then eats it. The other two chickens are laying normally- we have had hot weather. I did get her from a backyard sales and I had two of them- one morning ( about 4 months ago) I found the other one dead for no apparent reason. Perhaps she has egg drop syndrom and wasnt vaccinated properly.

thanks this is a great rescource- appreciate the help. Do you know how i can identify egg drop syndrome?

when a chicken begins to lay sometimes the eggs are soft or a weird shape. I would worry more about the egg eating. When I catch an egg eater and am sure it is them I cull the chicken. They will teach other chickens to do the same.

Oh dear- the culling is something I would have to really consider. She seems perfectly healthy and happy. Could I get her to stop eating the eggs or seperate her for a while or get her into the the roost to lay- ???

p.s.- no idea how to cull or even if I could. I realize that if I keep chickens I should be able to do this but not sure that I could
