Egg eating chickens

Chickens are finally starting to lay now that it is warming up. Girls laid 2 this morning. We left them in the coop in the hopes they would be inspired to lay more....until......they ate 1!!!!! What does this mean???

could be several things....

lack of nutrition... to many chickens in a a small space... boardom...

you need to pick up the eggs 2Xs a day (or more if possible)
do a search here there are tons of ways to try to stop them..
i personally cut the tip of the beak off on top on the ones i suspect..

Years ago my aunt had a flock who started eating eggs. Once they get in the habbit it can be hard to break. I have heard that some people will put golf balls or wooden eggs in for the hens to peck at and they learn that they can't get anything to eat so learn to leave eggs alone. Just make sure to collect eggs as soon as they are layed so they don't get them. My aunt ended up having to seperate who she thought was eating eggs from the rest. She was going to stew them, but a critter beat her to it! I guess that is what they get for eating her eggs! lol
