egg eating

would a rooster eat the chicken eggs? we have an outdoor entrance to the egg laying area and when I lifted the lid this morning the rooster was in one of the boxes with the hen and I left for several hours and when I came back there was an egg broken and even the shell eaten???? any ideas about this.

The short answer is yes. Just as a chicken will eat an egg. They have to aquire the taste for them. That sometimes happen when a shell breaks and they learn how good they taste. Note: I'm not speaking about scrambling and egg and feeding an unrecognizable food item to them. I'm talking about whole eggs...
