Egg exploded in bator on eggs and hatched chicks.

If it's developing you will see veins and at about a week you will see a wiggly chicken when you candle. If it stops developing the veins will disappear and the baby will stop moving and almost become sloshy in the egg, and before it explodes it will usually smell horrible.

Kelseygirl has it right. We did not candle the eggs that were under our broody. Didn't want to bother her too much. Problem was there were chickens laying in the box with her before we moved her and the eggs weren't marked. The 1st chick that was hatched was on day three. We lost a couple of chicks because momma was not leaving her eggs and wasn't caring for the hatched chicks. So I grabbed all the eggs that were left under her and threw them in the bator. It's been really busy here lately and I did not candle the eggs 1st. Had 3 chicks hatch before this 1 exploded. I don't recommend not candling the eggs. I guess I figured momma hen wouldn't set on eggs that weren't good. I know our ducks will get rid of clear eggs or quitters. This was our 1st broody hen, so now I know better.

They can go from developing to ready to explode fast! I had a baby wiggling at lockdown, then 2 days later it started oozing in the bator (Luckily it oozed instead of exploding), so I had to break lockdown to get it out.

I had a broody once, and instead of candling, I just pulled the eggs out and sniffed them every couple of days. This was after one had already exploded or gotten broken early in the cycle. I think out of a doz eggs only 1 hatched.

Glad to hear that you have a great momma. If I don't lock mine up they always lose chicks.

Can you smell it from outside the bator if you open the vent hole??

Honestly this one didn't smell, I just could see it leaking from the window, but all my bad eggs in the past I could smell outside the incubator without issue. If you smell a bad egg, grab it with a bag, because they have been know to explode when you pick them up.

Sorry for you that have to clean up the mess of a nasty exploded rotty egg but that smiley
