I am thinking about placing a 'Fresh Egg' for sale sign (with my phone number) at the front of our yard. We have a lot of people walking their dogs, etc. But I am not home during the day and in the evenings or weekends, etc. Will people try to knock on the door during the day and assuming we are home?

Can you share your experience about placing signs at the yard? Does it help the eggs to sale? What pricing, tips, etc? Thank you!

If you do not have a LOT of eggs, do not overadvertise.. and do not put your phone number out.. You will be out of eggs and still get a lot of calls and it will become annoying..

Just put on the sign, EGGS when available..

some people will not believe you if you tell them you are out.. some people even become angry.. think, is this what you want??

If it were me, I wouldn't do that. You could have every Tom, Dick, and Harry stopping by, and one of them may not be there for eggs. It gives anyone a reason to step foot on your property. These days, you just can't trust just anyone.

You could do a number of other things to get your eggs for sale out there. Craigslist is the first suggestion. I have seen a ton of adds there for fresh eggs for sale. Don't know how successful it is.

What we are planning on doing soon is to mail out a flyer to neighbors and friends telling them we have eggs for sale. We will ask all people to respond to the flyer if interested. We will thencall all those that have replied on Sundays to see how many eggs they need. Mondays will be delivery day. This would eliminate people just "stopping in" for eggs when it's not convienent for us. I also think we will sell more eggs this way. People may forget to get them from us, and when they go grocery shopping, just pick some up then because it's easier. It will also allow us to make sure everyone who wants eggs gets them. If you have "x" person getting three dozen a week, and some else is getting one dozen a week and we run short on eggs one week, person "x" may only get two dozen so others can get their dozen.

We'll see how it works soon. I will have 13 more hens laying soon. As soon as they start, we will be sending out mail flyer.

Goodluck!

Thanks for the eggcellent idea!! We will be getting ducks this spring and I know we won't be able to eat as many eggs as they can produce. I know how to freeze eggs but still, you can only do so much baking and make so many breakfasts....lol. I know some people feed extra eggs (cooked only) back to their poultry, but if I can I'd rather have the little quackers pay for at least part of their feed.

You have probably already looked into this but, before you do anything with a sign, make sure that it is legal for you to sell eggs from your home, both from a zoning and from an agricultural perspective. In some municipalities, it's okay to sell to neighbors and friends, but once you advertise publicly, it puts you in a different category.
