We have a hen sitting on eggs, some of them have hatched and on some the outer shell has been cracked and fallin off, but the inter skin is still intact. This morning my husband picked up one of those eggs and the chick was churping, he went back a little later on and the chick was dead, does anyone know if he should have helped the chick out of the skin?

It's a hard one to judge. Sometimes you can do more harm than good interfering with the hatching process. I usually help as I'd rather try and fail than not to try and regret it, but some people will tell you to never help.
Sorry for your little one
